The goal of this program is to insure your dog sets off on the right path for its hunting career. The foundation program provides the dog with the correct technical foundation and experiences to be a polished gun dog. Here we teach and reinforce advanced obedience in actual hunting situations to develop control under high distractions.

The course covers the following areas:

  • General obedience, developing whoa, here, heel and kennel with positive reinforcement
  • Collar conditioning
  • Bird and gun introduction
  • Develop Steady to wing (point and hold until you flush the bird)
  • Develop and improve natural retrieve
  • Develop search pattern and range and various hunting scenarios
  • Exposure to birds and gun
  • Introduction to hunting with other dogs
  • Honoring and backing

Birds
Exposure to birds is essential for any gun dog’s training; it goes without saying that a successful bird dog is passionate about hunting birds. The desire that fuels their passion is known as prey drive. The development of prey drive requires that a dog be introduced to live birds in a positive way.

Developing and nurturing each dog’s prey drive through the exposure to live birds is critical in a bird dog’s success.

How many birds is enough?
There is no single figure or magic equation in answering how many birds are enough to develop and hone an individual’s prey drive, each dog is an individual and some respond quicker than others . During the foundation training, the rate includes 10 birds , however we do recommend the dog having exposure to at least 30 birds or more. One thing you can do to help yourself and the dog is obedience at home , the more obedient the dog is prior to its training the quicker and more time we can spend on developing that prey drive and other essentials such as staying steady to flush and retrieving live birds to hand.

What to expect
For the gun dog of average ability and temperament you can expect a quiet, responsive, obedient, reliable dog that is steady to flush, proficient in retrieves as well as handling and hunting in varied environments. A gun dog ready for your first hunts.
